Rita Wickramasinghe has
created Batik Wall Art for
some 35 years.
Over her many years of
experience in this authentic
Batik Art form, Rita's
Batiks represents a variety
of styles, from
modern abstract art
to wild life, marine life,
and flowery designs. Other
favorites are of social and
spiritual themes as
influenced by her native
country of Sri Lanka.
Some 3 years ago, Rita
brought her form of Batik
Art to the United States,
especially Florida and
Atlantic States. Although
this art form is somewhat
known in the US
when associated with the
name "Batik", in reality
only a handful of art
lovers have an in dept
knowledge of this 3000 year
old art.
The application of
western Batik is marred with
many shortcuts , especially
in the application or
removal of the wax. The
signature of Batik's two
sides mirror image is also
often not established and
respected. Such shortcuts
belittles the authentic art
form of batik almost to the
level of a craft rather than
a FINE Art, hence and
unfortunately, Batik in the
US is often still battling
for its well deserved
respect in the sophisticated
art community.
Despite the reluctant
acceptance of Batik,
Rita's Batik Art has been
awarded, once properly
explained as to the proper
form of art, many top honors
in art galleries and art
shows throughout the
United States. Her work has
been illustrated and written
in several magazines and
newspapers.
Always striving to stay
ahead of the curve, Rita
expanded her fashion designs
of beach wraps and other
batik clothing emphasizing
the selection of colors and
combinations of designs.
When reviewed, many of
Rita's work has her
signature "paraffin
cracking", a method used to
enhance the Art of batik and
is visible in her pieces as
crisscrossing lines. Such
lines were created by
letting the dye run into the
groves of the cracking wax.
The unique way of wax and
dye within the beach wrap
are a specialty of Rita
wickramasinghe , the Artist. |
